Tommy Freeman scored two tries for The British & Irish Lions as the tourists powered their way to a statement victory against Queensland Reds.

In their second match of the Qatar Airways British & Irish Lions Tour to Australia 2025, the Lions cut loose to score eight tries in an emphatic 52-12 victory.

Freeman, who started on the right wing, scored one in each half, while Andrew Porter, Duhan van der Merwe, Maro Itoje, Jac Morgan, Huw Jones and Garry Ringrose also crossed.

Queensland Reds proved stern opposition in an entertaining first half but were unable to live with the Lions power after the break, with Andy Farrell’s men increasing in confidence through the night.

With the Tour now in full swing, the Lions head to Sydney to face NSW Waratahs on Saturday, while the first Test against Australia is just a couple of weeks away.

Plenty of players produced impressive performances to put themselves into the shop window for a Test spot, including the likes of Jack Conan, Finn Russell and Elliot Daly – though a late arm injury for the latter threatened to take the shine off an excellent performance.

LIONS AND REDS GO END-TO-END

With Suncorp Stadium set to host the first Test against Australia, the race is on for those with Test ambitions.

Captain Itoje, who sat out the win against Western Force, was certainly chomping at the bit and stole two Reds lineouts inside the first seven minutes to lay down a marker.

However, the Reds were as equally pumped and they scored the first points through Jeff Toomaga-Allen, who burrowed over the line under the posts following a line-break from centre Hunter Paisami and strong carry from No.8 Joe Brial.

The Kiwi prop has been capped three times for the All Blacks and played against the Lions for the Hurricanes on the 2017 Tour to New Zealand.

The Lions were inches away from an almost-instant reply. A lineout from five metres was safely collected by Itoje, and a rolling maul was so nearly dotted down by Bundee Aki – but just about held up by the Reds defence.

With two scrum penalties against the Lions in the first 15 minutes, they knew they were in a game, but a brilliant try mid-way through the half helped settle them down.

Van der Merwe stepped in off the left wing and that helped the square up the Reds defence. The ball went through the hands to Freeman, who outsprinted his defender and slid over in the corner.

Russell landed an excellent conversion from the right to restore parity at 7-7 but the Reds were the next to score five minutes later.

Outside centre Josh Flook took advantage of a cute kick from Harry McLaughlin-Phillips, who spotted space in behind Jones and delivered a horizontal grubber for his mate to collect.

In a back-and-forth first half, the Lions were the next to attack and, as their confidence grew, they found holes in the Reds’ defence.

Freeman thought he was in for a second but was just stopped short. However, from the resulting penalty, the Lions went up the middle and Porter drove over for his first try of the Tour.

Increasingly sharp, the Lions hit their stride. Minutes later, scrum-half Jamison Gibson-Park took a quick free-kick from 10 metres out, and fizzed a pass wide to Ollie Chessum, who then went to Conan, who in turn fed Van der Merwe in the corner.

The Reds were on the back foot but thought they hit back straight from the re-start as the Lions failed to collect the kick-off. The ball ran loose into the end zone, where a chasing Lachie Anderson almost reached it to touch down.

FREE-FLOWING LIONS TAKE CONTROL

Just as they did in the first half, the Reds came steaming out for the second half, piling pressure onto the Lions in defence.

But the next try again went the Lions way and, after a break from Aki, Gibson-Park released Itoje, who barrelled his way over the line.

Head Coach Andy Farrell then rang the changes, sending on a new front row in Ellis Genge, Luke Cowan-Dickie and Finlay Bealham, and a new half-back partnership in Alex Mitchell and Fin Smith.

That fresh energy paid immediate dividends, as the Lions – with a penalty 10 metres out – chose to tap-and-go, and Mitchell and Smith helped tee up Aki. The Connacht centre took some stopping and the Reds defence left a gaping hole for Morgan to run through for the fifth try of the night.

Sensing the chance to rack up a big haul of points, the Lions went for the jugular. Full-back Daly – who started in place of an ill Hugo Keenan – helped to win a penalty on half-way, which was sent into touch by Smith to set-up another attack.

After a driving maul and a couple of carries, the Lions power proved too much for the Reds as Mitchell set-up Freeman to muscle his way across the line again.

And the best was still to come.

Tim Ryan carried the ball into midfield and tried to a delicate chip over the Lions defence, but Jones plucked it out of the sky, and galloped clear into open space to also score his first Lions try.

The positive vibe was soon to be slightly deflated, as Daly had to go with an arm injury, but Ringrose ensured the Lions ended on a high note by bringing up the half-century with the clock in the red.

Farrell's side will wait for an update on Daly and head to Sydney with their tails up following a strong all-round display.
