Wherever he has played the one consistent theme for Huw Jones has been his nose for the try-line.

From South Africa to Scotland, London to Glasgow, at every level, the outside centre has always known just where to be when a try opportunity presents itself.

Now, he has added that most prestigious of accolades – a Test try for The British & Irish Lions.

Not only that, he did it in a match he was not even expecting to be playing.

Jones was part of the Lions side that had beaten the Wallabies in the first Test in Brisbane, but was due to drop out of the team for the second Test in Melbourne with Garry Ringrose in line to start instead.

When the Ireland centre realised he was suffering from concussion symptoms, he withdrew from the encounter at the MCG, giving Jones a second Test opportunity, lining up alongside Bundee Aki.

He took it with both hands, crossing for a crucial score right before half-time as the Lions came from 23-5 down to pull off a stunning 29-26 victory and clinch the Qatar Airways Lions Men’s Series in the process.

In front of a record crowd for a Lions match, Jones explained that even with a slightly unusual build-up, he was ready to hit the ground running.

He said: “It’s so special. To come and do it here in front of nearly 100,000, an incredible atmosphere. It wasn’t perfect but when the bench came on in the second half, then that finish, it’s unbelievable.

“Obviously I had that initial disappointment of not being named in the squad internally, luckily we had all run through the plays. On Thursday, when Garry pulled out, I was gutted for him. He deserved to play and we have got so close over this period, on this Tour, all the centres have connected really well. To have to pull himself out with his head is so tough. But I got the nod, was ready to go and I’m glad we got the job done.

“We always believed, even when we went in at half time, the chat was that even if it had been 23-5, we were still going to win. We had given them a lot of chances, discipline was so poor in the first half, they piggybacked us down the field, penalties into the corner, it just wasn’t good enough. But as soon as we fixed that, got back up there, scored a couple of tries, that belief never went away.”

Trailing by 18 points after half an hour, it was a four-minute spell before the break that really turned the game around.

Tom Curry got over for the second Lions try before Jones’ moment came, popping up outside Hugo Keenan and crashing over as the deficit was cut to just six points at the break.

Jones recounted his score: “That close to the line, you know the defence will come hard, which means you have a chance of beating them with your footwork. I got the pass from Hugo, a little bounce to the outside and managed to power over. I’m happy with that.”

Even after that score, the Lions spent much of the second half trailing, with Jones making way for Owen Farrell with 20 minutes remaining and the score standing at 26-24.

Keenan then enjoyed the fairytale finale, clinching the series in dramatic fashion, as Jones, Ringrose and the rest of the Lions squad celebrated in front of the Sea of Red.

A Lions Test try-scorer and now a Lions series winner – it has been some 48 hours.
